In Sangha-ri, Hongbuk-myeon, Hongseong-gun, South Chungcheong Province stands a huge rock-carved Buddha. The bald head, narrow and elongated eyes, broad low nose, and relatively small mouth are all rendered flatly, and a faint smile at the corners of the mouth gives a gentle impression. The body is likewise flat and without volume, with only the two hands, placed one above the other side by side, clearly depicted, while almost everything else is omitted. It appears to belong to the same lineage as other huge Buddhist statues surviving in the Chungcheong region, such as the Standing Maitreya Bodhisattva of Gwanchoksa Temple (Treasure No. 218), which clearly displays a regional style.
