Flagpole supports are installed at the entrance to a temple; when the temple holds an event or ceremony, a banner is hung there. The long pole on which the banner is hung is called a danggan, and the two stone pillars that support the pole from either side are called danggan-jiju, or flagpole supports. The pole itself rarely survives, and in most cases only the two pillars remain. These flagpole supports, standing on the old site of Beopsusa Temple, consist of two rectangular stone pillars facing one another. Overall elegant, simple and refined in form, they provide valuable material for the study of the lineage of flagpole supports.
