This old house stands on a low hill. It is said that Yi Dan-ha, who served as Minister of Personnel (Ijopanseo) during the reign of King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720), returned to his hometown and built it. The exact date of construction is unknown, though it is said that the anchae (main hall) was extensively repaired about ninety years ago. The anchae and sarangchae (men's quarters) are arranged in a square (ㅁ-shaped) plan around a courtyard, and the house faces south-east. It was built on a relatively high stone platform about 1 m tall, and is an elaborate palgak (hipped-and-gabled) roof house shaped like the character 八 ("eight"). The anchae follows the gyeopjip (double-row house) type commonly found in the Yeongdong region, while the daecheong (wooden-floored hall) and geonneonbang (side room), typical of the Yeongseo and central regions, are joined in an L-shaped (ㄱ-shaped) arrangement. Doors were fitted all around the daecheong, and a toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) was added along the geonneonbang, daecheong and anbang (main room) to connect them with the outside. From the front of the kitchen, the storeroom, cattle shed, main gate and sarangchae continue in a U-shaped (ㄷ-shaped) arrangement. The sarangchae comprises the keunsarang (main men's room), jageunsarang (small men's room), seoham (a book-storage room), daecheong and meoseumbang (servants' room); it is unusual in that the cattle shed juts out to the right of the main gate. The daecheong of the sarangchae also has doors fitted, and toenmaru verandas at both front and back give the space an airy, open feel. To the west of the sarangchae stands the detached Sugodang Hall, comprising a daecheong, a small wooden floor, an attic and a book-storage room. Sugodang Hall houses the garments of Oejae Yi Dan-ha and his wife (designated a National Folklore Heritage), which are important material for the study of Joseon-period clothing; it also preserves various drafts of poetry and prose, royal appointment documents, books, personal letters and works of calligraphy and painting.
