Gimsegyun Old House, Jecheon
제천 김세균 고가 · 堤川 金世均 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house where Kim Se-gyun (1812-1879), who served as Minister of Personnel (Ijopanseo) during the reign of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834) of Joseon, once lived. It originally stood at Bungno-ri, Hansu-myeon, but when the Chungju Dam was built, the main hall (anchae) was rebuilt in Chungju, while the detached men's quarters (sarangchae) were relocated to this site. The kitchen is placed at the centre, at the point where the building bends into an L shape, fitted with an ondol underfloor-heating system, and a wooden-floored hall (daecheong) is set at the end of the front. The daecheong has been fitted with doors to form an enclosed wooden-floored room, and it is unusual that the sarangbang (men's quarters room) is placed at the very rear of the house, so that ancestral rites could be held there. The house has a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung) whose sides take the shape of the character 八 (eight); well-dressed square plinth stones and wooden meoreum sills fitted beneath each room's doors add to the dignity of the house.
