Myeongbujeon Hall Ksitigarbha Painting of Jangansa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting, enshrined behind the Ksitigarbha triad statues in Myeongbujeon Hall of Jangansa Temple, was made in 1856 together with the Vulture Peak Assembly painting of Sakyamuni Buddha enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of the same temple. Painted in colour on silk, the work shows some staining and flaking in places, but overall its condition is good. The composition centres on Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, with the Venerable Domyeong and King Mudok placed at the lower front along with the Four Heavenly Kings arranged to the sides, while four bodhisattvas surround the upper section in a symmetrical arrangement. This painting, too, was produced by six monk-painters, including the master painter (geumeo) Geumam Cheonyeo (1794-1878), who also painted the Vulture Peak Assembly painting in Daeungjeon Hall of Jangansa Temple. The iconography of this work is relatively simple, consisting of the Ksitigarbha triad, four bodhisattvas and the Four Heavenly Kings. Unlike a Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings painting enshrined as the middle-and-lower register icon of a temple's main hall, however, it is a case of a painting enshrined in a Myeongbujeon Hall that has its own separate statues of the Ten Kings. It is therefore valued as a heritage resource for the study of Ksitigarbha paintings in Myeongbujeon Halls of the late Joseon period.
