Yeonpyeongbuwongun Spirit-path Stele
연평부원군신도비 · 延平府院君神道碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA sindobi (spirit-path stele) is a stone monument recording the lifetime achievements of a king or high official, erected to the south-east of his tomb. This stele honours Yi Gwi (1557-1633), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. Yi Gwi studied under Yi I and Seong Hon, and during the Japanese invasions of 1592 he worked hard to recruit soldiers to save the country. He rendered distinguished service in the Injo Restoration, which drove out King Gwanghaegun and placed King Injo on the throne, becoming a first-class meritorious subject, and was later enfeoffed with the title Yeonpyeongbuwongun. The stele consists of a body and a capstone carved from a single stone, set upon a tortoise-shaped base stone. The tortoise base stone holds its head out horizontally, and the capstone bears a realistic and lively depiction of two dragons among clouds. The inscription was composed by Jo Ik and written in calligraphy by O Jun, while the title of the stele was written by Yeo U-jing.
