Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSin Gyeong-jun (1712–1781), a renowned scholar of Silhak (Practical Learning) during the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon, produced two maps in the style of military maps: the 'Bukbanggangyeokdo' (Map of the Northern Frontier) and the 'Sea Chart North of Ganghwado Island'. Sin Gyeong-jun was a descendant of Sin Mal-ju, the younger brother of Sin Suk-ju, and left achievements in many fields including philology, phonology and geography, in works such as the Byeongseonchaek, the Sansugyeong and the Unhae Hunminjeongeum. The Unhae Hunminjeongeum in particular can be regarded as a major scholarly achievement, the most profound treatment of the theory of writing since the creation of Hunminjeongeum. The Bukbanggangyeokdo is drawn on about a single sheet of mulberry paper (changhoji), measuring 11 cm in height and 73.5 cm in width. It shows in detail the mountains, rivers, fortress walls, islands, place names and stone monuments from Hwanghae-do province to the Amnokgang (Yalu) and Dumangang (Tumen) rivers. The sea chart north of Ganghwado Island is more than three times larger than the Bukbanggangyeokdo, measuring 272 cm in width and 83 cm in height. It, too, is drawn on hanji, but the paper is much thinner, and because of its great size three sheets were joined horizontally, with two further sheets of about 21 cm added along the bottom edge vertically. The distances between the many large and small islands from Ganghwado Island to the mouth of the Amnokgang River on the left are marked on the right-hand side.
