This seowon, a Confucian academy, was built to honour the scholarship and virtue of Jo Sik (1501-1572), pen name Nammyeong, at the site where he had studied. It was erected in 1576, the ninth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and in 1608, the first year of King Gwanghaegun, it received a royal charter confirming state recognition and support. During the reign of Emperor Gojong (r. 1863-1907) it was demolished under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing Confucian academies, but it was rebuilt in the 1930s and survives to the present. The buildings that remain today are a shrine, a middle gate, a lecture hall, east and west dormitories, and an outer gate. The academy follows the layout of study quarters at the front and shrine at the rear, typical of such institutions. Its educational function has now disappeared, leaving only its function as a place of ancestral rites.
