This is the burial ground of Yi Geuk-bae (1422–1495), Buwongun of Gwangneung, who served seven kings from King Sejong to Yeonsangun of Joseon while practising moral governance, and of his descendants. Yi Geuk-bae passed the samasi examination in 1447, the twenty-ninth year of King Sejong, becoming a jinsa (holder of the preliminary literary licentiate degree), and in the same year passed the regular session of the munkwa civil service examination in the jeonggwa grade. He rendered great service in helping King Sejo ascend the throne and was recorded as a third-class Jwaik merit subject, and was then enfeoffed as Gwangneung-gun. In 1459 he took part in the northern campaign against the Jurchen as a staff officer under Sin Suk-ju, and from 1462 he served in succession as minister of the Ministries of Personnel, Rites, War and Punishments. In 1479, the tenth year of King Seongjong, he became Yeongjungchubusa, chief of the Office of Central Affairs, and when famine struck for two years from 1481 he served actively as a relief commissioner. In 1485, the sixteenth year of King Seongjong, he became State Councillor of the Right, and in 1493 he was appointed Chief State Councillor but declined on grounds of old age and illness, and was again enfeoffed as Buwongun of Gwangneung. The burial ground is located in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and among the tombs, that of Yi Geuk-bae was made in 1495, the first year of Yeonsangun, forming a paired mound with that of his wife of the Gyeongju Choe clan. In front of the tomb stand a memorial stone, an offering table and a jangmyeongdeung (a stone lantern erected before a tomb), and to either side stand two pairs each of civil and military stone figures. A sindobi (a stele erected beside the road near a tomb to commemorate the lifetime achievements of a king or high official) was erected in 1496, the second year of Yeonsangun, its inscription composed by Sin Jong-ho, Minister of Rites and Jehak of the Office of Special Advisers, who was renowned as a master calligrapher. The unusual cloud pattern carved on the capstone, the calligraphic style of the inscription, and the refined stone-carving technique are of great artistic, technical and scholarly value.
