This house was built in 1613, the fifth year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, by Jeong Ho-rye, magistrate of Haenam. Jeong Ho-rye was the eldest grandson of Jeong Se-a, a righteous-army commander who raised a righteous army during the Japanese invasion of 1592 and won many battle honours, including repelling Japanese troops who had invaded Yeongcheon. It is a traditionally styled building laid out in the shape of the character 工, and to the north of the building stands Hwangosa Shrine, which enshrines the memorial tablet of Jeong Se-a.
