Inscribed "Taehwa4nyeon" Standing Rock-carved Buddha, Jincheon
진천 태화4년명 마애여래입상 · 鎭川 太和四年銘 磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha (maaebul) located in Yongjeon-ri, Chopyeong-myeon, Jincheon-gun, North Chungcheong Province. A maaebul is a Buddha image carved, in either incised line or relief, into a large rock face or boulder on a cliff. This figure stands on a rectangular pedestal (daejwa) carved with lotus petals, beneath an oval, boat-shaped halo (gwangbae) incised in fine lines on the rock surface. Each part of the Buddha's body is badly damaged and difficult to make out clearly. An inscription carved beside the figure reveals that it was carved in the fifth year of King Heungdeok of Silla (830). The carving of the lines is beautiful overall, and since the Buddha carries an absolute date, it is a valuable resource for the study of Buddhist sculpture in the Jincheon region.
