The house stands with its back to a thickly wooded hill; the main house (anchae) was built in 1894 and the men's quarters (sarangchae) in 1915. It is a typical square (ㅁ-shaped) house of the Yeongdong region, arranged around the main gate with the sarangchae to the right, an auxiliary building to the left, and the anchae facing the gate. The anchae is a straight-line (一-shaped) building of six bays across the front and two bays deep, arranged from left to right as a two-bay kitchen, a two-bay master room, a daecheong (wooden-floored central hall), and a room across the hall (geonneonbang). A relatively wide toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) faces the inner courtyard in front of the rooms and the daecheong. The sarangchae, positioned facing the anchae, is an L-shaped (ㄱ-shaped) double-row house made up of a daecheong and rooms. The sarangbang, the men's quarters room, has a separate storage space, allowing books and other items to be kept there. Both the anchae and the sarangchae have ornate hip-and-gable roofs whose sides form the shape of the character 'eight' (八). To the left of the main gate is a seodangbang, a room where a village schoolteacher (hunjang) lived and taught the family's children. There was originally a haengnangchae, a row of servants' quarters, in front of the sarangchae, but it is said to have burned down during the Korean War. The house is said to have been built in the time of the present owner's grandfather, and the woodwork is of very fine craftsmanship. The names of the carpenters who built the house, Choe Mae-jik and Jang Deok-so, have also been passed down.
