Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPojeongsamullu Pavilion was the main gate standing in front of Seonhwadang Hall, where the governor of Chungcheong-do province conducted official business during the Joseon period. Gongju was the centre of local administration overseeing the whole of Chungcheong-do, and the provincial office is said to have had around fifty buildings, but today only Seonhwadang Hall, Pojeongsa Gate with its three-bay gate, and one auxiliary building remain. It originally stood beside the high school attached to Gongju Normal College, then was moved next to the old Gongju county office, where it was used, among other things, as the Gongju No. 2 Methodist Church. It was restored to its present position in front of Seonhwadang Hall in 1993. Pojeongsa Gate is a two-storey building, five bays across the front and two bays deep, with a hipped roof (ujingak) — a roof with four sloping faces — of the kind commonly found on gate pavilions. Apart from the shape of the roof, none of the other features typical of gate-pavilion architecture appear in this building. On the ground floor the two outer sections on either side are closed with wooden plank walls, and only the three central bays have doors for passage; the upper floor has a raised wooden floor enclosed by a railing, with a staircase on the west side. Having been used as a church and as offices, the interior and window frames have been altered, but the exterior remains relatively well preserved. The three-bay gate has a raised central roof section and is a simple structure without bracket sets, in the plain mindori style; the bays on either side are used as dwellings. Originally located in Gyo-dong, it too was restored in front of Seonhwadang Hall in 1993. Although Pojeongsa Gate and the three-bay gate have been altered through use for other purposes, they are important material for the study of late-Joseon government-office architecture.
