Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands at Hwaamsa Temple and records the temple's jungchang, or reconstruction, meaning the renewal of an existing temple. According to the inscription, Hwaamsa was founded before the reign of King Munmu of Silla and subsequently underwent several rounds of repair. The stele consists of an inscribed body set upon a broad square base; the inscription is badly worn and difficult to read. According to its content, in 1417, the seventeenth year of King Taejong of Joseon, Seong Dal-saeng, who had taken up the post of governor of Pyeongan Province, was searching for a site to build a temple when he heard that the location of Hwaamsa was auspicious. In accordance with his wishes, the abbot Haechong rebuilt the temple in 1425, the seventh year of King Sejong. The inscription also records that Great Master Wonhyo and Great Master Uisang once stayed and practised austerities here, and it carries their charge that the temple be well preserved. The text of the inscription was composed in 1441, the twenty-third year of King Sejong, and the stele itself was erected in 1572, the fifth year of King Seonjo.
