Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA sindobi is a memorial stele recording the lifetime achievements of a king or a high official, erected to the south-east of his tomb; this stele honours General Sin Gyeong-jin, a military official of the Joseon period under King Injo. Sin Gyeong-jin was born in 1575, the eighth year of King Seonjo, the son of General Sin Rip, and served as a royal escort officer (seonjeongwan). He passed the military examination and held a series of offices, and began to rise in rank for his part in the Injo Restoration. When Yi Gwal's Rebellion broke out in 1624, the second year of King Injo, he became commander of the Military Training Command and escorted the royal carriage; during the Jeongmyo War he accompanied the king to Ganghwado Island, and the following year was ennobled as Buwongun of Pyeongseong. When the Byeongja War broke out, he held back the enemy and bought the king time to take refuge at Namhansanseong Fortress, and for this great service he eventually rose to the position of Chief State Councillor. The stele consists of a stele body set on a flat granite base carved in the shape of a tortoise, topped with a roof stone; before the identity of its subject was established, it was known simply as the "tortoise stele" because of its large tortoise-shaped base. The inscription was composed by Song Si-yeol, whose pen name was Uam, and the calligraphy was written by Bak Tae-yu. Sin Gyeong-jin's burial ground lies opposite the stele.
