Seated Wooden Amitabha Buddha and Votive Objects of Seonamsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This statue depicts a Buddha seated in full lotus position, with a straight back and the head tilted slightly forward. It is a wooden image, hollowed out deeply from the head down to below the knees, and is overall in good condition. Both hands touch the first and third fingers together, with the arms held close to the sides: the right arm is bent at the elbow, the palm turned outward at chest height, while the left arm rests with the palm facing upward below the chest, forming the mudra of the middle grade of rebirth. The bokjang, the votive deposit placed inside the statue, filled its interior from the opening down at the base up to the area of the face with sutras and other objects, mainly booklet-form scriptures and incense. Among the votive objects were three accordion-folded sutras of an older style; two of these were votive prayer texts related to the making of the statue, recording the date of production and the names of the painters, or hwawon, who took part, making them important sources. Although the stylistic features of the Seated Wooden Amitabha Buddha of Seonamsa Temple do not match the date recorded in the repair votive prayer text among the votive objects, the scale and condition of the work, together with its distinctive features, indicate that it merits designation and preservation as a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Busan Metropolitan City.
