Samsung Hall Historic House, Samcheok
삼척 삼성헌 고택 · 三陟 三省軒 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSet on relatively level ground with a hill of old pine forest behind it, this house appears to have been built around 200 years ago. There is a small pond and a bamboo grove to the left of the house, and a small courtyard to the right. Centred on the main gate, the women's quarters (anchae) — five bays across the front and three bays deep — stand to the left, and the men's quarters (sarangchae) — four bays across the front and three bays deep — stand to the right. The women's quarters have an unusual double-row layout, with a wooden-floored hall at the centre linking to each of the rooms. The kitchen contains two small heated side-rooms, with a firebox on one side and, at the front, a raised wooden porch high enough to function as an independent room. The men's quarters have three rooms with a wooden porch installed in front, and a firebox and a cattle shed attached on the left. Both the women's and men's quarters have an ornate hipped-and-gabled roof, whose sides form the shape of the character for "eight" (八). Facing the gatehouse building is a three-bay structure linking the women's and men's quarters, which has been fitted out as a storeroom, though this does not appear to be original. Although the house has fallen into considerable disrepair compared with its former state, it is a valuable example of an old middle-class house that retains its original form, and it is also unusual in that traces of an old mountain fortress remain on the hill behind it.
