Seated Rock-carved Buddha in Hogye-ri, Yangsan
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddha image carved into a large rock in Hogye-dong, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do; a cave beneath the rock shows traces of an ondol (underfloor heating) system having once been installed there. The cave is said to be "Bangogul," where the Venerable Wonhyo once practised austerities, though there is as yet no firm evidence for this. Unusually for a rock-carved Buddha, small snail-shell-shaped curls have been attached to the head, and a small topknot-shaped bun sits on the crown. The face is large in proportion to the body, and the long, narrowed eyes, large nose and closed mouth give it a rough, unrefined impression. The body is badly weathered and its details are unclear, though the robe draped over both shoulders is carved in thick, shallow lines, and the hands and feet are likewise rendered simply. The pedestal is incised with the flat outline of a fully bloomed lotus, and the halo, close to oval in shape, survives only as faint lines.
