This standing stone Buddha stands below Jukjusanseong Fortress, north of Bongeopsa Temple Site. It faithfully inherits the traditional style of Unified Silla Buddha images and shows refined carving technique, and is regarded as an excellent example of early Goryeo Buddhist sculpture. The head, which had been severed from the body, has been rejoined, and the feet were restored recently. The Buddha stands on a round pedestal carved with lotus flowers; the halo (mandorla) does not survive. Above the bald head is a large ushnisha (the topknot-shaped bump on the crown). The face, somewhat large in proportion to the body, is round, and the ears hang down as far as the shoulders. The facial features are relatively small, but the eyes are long and horizontal, almost closed. Both arms are held close to the body; the right hand is held near the waist, palm turned outward and fingers pointing down, in an open gesture. The left arm likewise hangs straight down close to the body, with the left hand also lowered. The robe, draped over both shoulders, covers the whole front of the body, forming tight U-shaped folds at the chest before dividing into a Y-shape at the thighs and separating into long U-shaped folds down each leg, flowing down below the knees. This is a form that became popular from around the 8th century of the Unified Silla period.
