A hyanggyo is a state-established educational institution built to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local residents. This school was built during the reign of King Taejo of Joseon (r. 1392–1398), later moved to its present site during the reign of King Hyojong (r. 1649–1659), and repaired in 1966. The buildings that survive today are the Daeseongjeon, the shrine housing the spirit tablets of Confucian scholars from China and Korea, and the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students gathered to study. During the Joseon period it was run on land, books and bondservants granted by the state, but after the Gabo Reform (1894) its educational function ceased, and today only its function as a shrine for memorial rites remains. The books once kept here have almost all been scattered and lost.
