Seated Rock-carved Buddha in Samjeongja-dong, Changwon
창원 삼정자동 마애여래좌상 · 昌原 三亭子洞 磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha image cut into a natural rock face in Samjeongja-dong, Changwon, in Gyeongsangnam-do. The head has a raised topknot-shaped hair bun, and the face is so heavily weathered as to be almost unrecognisable. The drapery over both shoulders cannot be examined in detail, but it appears to fall down to cover the knees and flow onto the pedestal. The left hand rests on the knee, and the right hand is likewise placed on the knee with the fingertips pointing towards the ground. On the pedestal, three overlapping U-shaped folds are carved to represent a wave pattern; although this rendering is somewhat formulaic, it has a distinctive appearance. The halo behind the body bears no ornamentation, with the head and body indicated only by outlines. Although this is a skilfully carved work complete with both halo and pedestal, it is, on the whole, considerably damaged. Judging from its various carving techniques, it is presumed to date from the Unified Silla period.
