Guardian Deities Painting of Bomunsa Temple
보문사 신중도 · 普門寺 神衆圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddhist painting of guardian deities, Sinjung, enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Bomunsa Temple. Sinjung were originally indigenous Indian folk deities who were absorbed into Buddhism as its dharma-protecting spirits during the process of Buddhism's localisation, and paintings such as this one were made so that they could be worshipped in their own right. It is painted in colour on silk and measures 200 cm in width and 140 cm in height. The composition is divided into an upper and a lower register: the upper register centres on Jeseok (Indra) surrounded by heavenly beings, while the lower register depicts the guardian generals who protect the Buddhist Law. The use of colour, the technique of depicting figures, and the date of production are the same as those of the Vulture Peak Assembly Painting in the same Daeungjeon Hall.
