It is a state-run educational institution established in the Yeongdong region during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon (1567–1608) to enshrine and hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars, and to provide Confucian education and moral guidance to the local people. It was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and was restored inside the old town wall in 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong. In 1676, the second year of King Sukjong, it was moved to Gugyo-dong, and in 1754, the thirtieth year of King Yeongjo, it was relocated again to its present site. It follows the layout known as jeonhak-humyo, with the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, placed at the front, and the Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall, at the rear. The Daeseongjeon, which enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and of Confucian scholars from China and Korea, and the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students gathered to study, both survive today. During the Joseon period it was run with land, slaves and books provided by the state. Today it no longer serves an educational function, and only its role in holding memorial rites remains.
