A hyanggyo is a state-established educational institution built to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local people. It is said that a Confucian school was first built in Yeongwol in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo. During the Korean War in 1950, every building was burned down except Daeseongjeon Hall, and Daeseongjeon Hall was repaired in 1973. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall and the main gate, Punghwaru Pavilion. During the Joseon period, the school taught students with land, slaves and books granted by the state, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 it lost its educational function as new fields of learning took hold, and it now holds memorial rites for Confucius only twice a year, in spring and autumn.
