A hyanggyo was a local educational institution built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to the local populace. Jincheon Local Confucian School was built during the reign of King Taejo (r. 1392–1398), the founder of Joseon. In 1804, the fourth year of King Sunjo, Myeongnyundang and the east and west dormitories were repaired and Punghwaru was built. Daeseongjeon was repaired in 1816, and the school has undergone several further repairs since. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon, Dongmu, Seomu, Myeongnyundang, Punghwaru and other auxiliary buildings. Daeseongjeon is the shrine hall where the memorial tablets of Confucius and various other sages are enshrined and rites performed; together with Dongmu and Seomu it forms the ritual quarters. Myeongnyundang is the lecture hall where students studied, forming the centre of the teaching quarters. Punghwaru served both as a resting place for students and as a gate pavilion. During the Joseon period the school received land, books and slaves from the state to teach students, but after the Gabo Reforms of 1894 its educational role ended, and since then it has only held memorial rites twice a year, in spring and autumn.
