Wido Island Government Office
위도관아 · 蝟島官衙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Joseon-period government office was a naval garrison established in 1682, the eighth year of King Sukjong, to guard against raids by Japanese pirates. Because the area under the jurisdiction of the Right Naval Command of Jeolla-do was too large, a naval garrison was placed here to oversee the south-western coastal districts of Garipo, Gogunsan, Beopseongpo and Gunsanpo. Today only the dongheon, the hall where the local magistrate conducted official business, survives, so it is difficult to picture the site's original appearance. It is a single-storey building measuring five kan across the front and three kan on the side, with a paljak roof, the most ornate roof form, whose gable end takes the shape of the Chinese character 八, meaning "eight." The building is currently used as a township office.
