Buncheong Ware Stamped Chrysanthemum Design Saibutaeho
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Judging from its shape and its stamped (inhwa) decoration technique, this buncheong ware jar — a grey stoneware coated with white slip and decorated here with a stamped chrysanthemum pattern — is thought to have been produced in the Chungcheong-do region in the 15th century, the early Joseon period. It is a taeho, a placenta jar, of the saibu type, fitted with lug handles and made up of an inner and an outer vessel. Among such placenta jars, the overall form seen in National Treasure No. 177, the Buncheong Ware Placenta Jar with Stamped Chrysanthemum Design (Outer and Inner Jars) — a plump, rounded outer jar paired with a slender inner jar — together with the stamped floral pattern on the body's surface, can also be observed in the placenta jar held by the Dong-A University Museum. In this way, during the first half of the 15th century many buncheong ware jars fitted with four lug handles were produced, and a fair number of examples survive today. Compared with National Treasure No. 177, the piece in the Dong-A University Museum is somewhat inferior in the refinement of its clay and in its forming, glazing and decoration technique, but it is similar in shape and size and, having both an inner and an outer jar, it is a valuable 15th-century buncheong ware placenta jar.
