Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a state-established educational institution built to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local people. Samcheok Local Confucian School was built at the foot of Gosarijae Pass in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo; it was moved to Wolgyegok in Okseo-dong, present-day Dangjeo-ri, in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong, and then relocated to its present site in 1468, the 14th year of King Sejo. The school today comprises several buildings, including Myeongnyundang Hall, the eastern and western dormitories (dongjae and seojae), Daeseongjeon Hall, and Dongmu and Seomu. At the front is the study area, comprising Myeongnyundang Hall, where students studied, and the dongjae and seojae, where they lived. At the rear, Daeseongjeon Hall, which enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages and where memorial rites are held, together with Dongmu and Seomu, forms the ritual space, giving the complex the "study area in front, shrine behind" layout typical of Confucian schools. During the Joseon period, the school taught students with land, books and slaves granted by the state, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 its educational function disappeared, and it now only holds memorial rites twice a year, in spring and autumn.
