Yesan Iseongman Brothers Hyoje Stele
예산이성만형제효제비 · 禮山李成萬兄弟孝悌碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to honour the filial devotion and brotherly loyalty of the brothers Yi Seong-man and Yi Sun, who lived in the early Goryeo period. According to the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, both brothers served their parents with the utmost filial piety. Even after their parents died, the elder brother kept watch over their father's grave and the younger brother kept watch over their mother's grave, each tending it for three years. If some special food became available, neither brother would eat it unless the other was present, and they took breakfast together at the elder brother's house and dinner together at the younger brother's house. The Joseon court commended this conduct and ordered that a stele be erected. The stele consists of an elongated body surmounted by a capstone; the base stone beneath it was added at a later date. The body of the stele records that the king, in recognition of their conduct, ordered a jeongmun — a red memorial gate erected to honour loyal subjects, filial children and virtuous women — to be built in their honour, and decreed that their example should stand as a model for generations to come. The capstone sits atop the body like a hat, crowned at its summit by a large, round ornament. The stele was originally erected in 1497, the third year of the reign of Yeonsangun, and stood beside Gabanggyo Bridge, but it was moved to its present location after that site was submerged by the construction of Yedang Reservoir.
