Jeonggwandang Hall Stupa of Baengnyeonsa Temple
백련사 정관당 부도 · 白蓮寺 靜觀堂 浮屠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the sarira stupa — a monument enshrining a monk's cremated relics — of Master Ilseon of Jeonggwandang Hall (1533–1609), standing in front of the Cheonwangmun Gate of Baengnyeonsa Temple. Master Ilseon was a monk of the mid-Joseon period and a disciple of Master Seosan, and he had a great influence on the spread of Buddhism in the Jeonbuk region. The stupa has a simple form, with an elongated bell-shaped body set on a round base stone encircled with lotus petals. The surface of the body is unadorned, except that the very tip is carved to a point like a spinning top. Below the body is inscribed the name of the stupa, "Jeonggwandang Ilseon-tap" (靖観堂 一禅), and on the top of the base stone is written "Manryeok 37th year" (萬暦三十七年建), from which it is known that the stupa was erected in 1609, the first year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon.
