Seated Gunwi Triad Seokgul Stone Vairocana Buddha
군위삼존석굴석조비로자나불좌상 · 軍威三尊石窟石造毘盧遮那佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe seated stone Vairocana Buddha of the Gunwi Triad Rock-cut Cave was made around the ninth century, some time after the triad of stone Buddhas already enshrined there. It shows the typical form of the Silla Vairocana Buddha images popular at the time, making it possible to trace how Buddha images and Buddhist faith changed and developed. The Buddha sits in gyeolgabujwa, the full lotus posture used by the Buddha in meditation, and wears his robe in the tonggyeon style, which covers both shoulders. The robe rests lightly across each shoulder, leaving the chest broadly exposed, and the folds of drapery running down the arms form wave-like patterns again at the knees. The hand gesture, or sudra, is the jigwonin, and the neck bears the three creases, or samdo, that mark a buddha's body. The cheeks are full and the ears hang long; the hair is coiled like a conch shell, and the usnisha, the knob-like protrusion on the crown of the head, is flat. Originally, together with its now-destroyed pedestal, the statue stood about 30 metres north of its present site, but in 1990, when the Daeungjeon Hall was enlarged, a new pedestal and altar were made and the statue was moved to its current location.
