Yi Hang-ro Birthplace
이항로선생생가 · 李恒老先生生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the house where Hwaseo Yi Hang-ro (1792–1868), a Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period, was born and raised. The village of Byeokgye, where the house stands, is a single-clan settlement of the Byeokjin Yi lineage; besides Yi Hang-ro's birthplace it is also home to Nosansa Shrine, through which his profound scholarship and Confucian learning have been handed down. The family is said to have settled in Byeokgye from the time of Yi Hang-ro's great-great-grandfather, and his father is said to have built the main house of the birthplace around two hundred years ago. The buildings are currently arranged with an L-shaped main house and a U-shaped detached men's quarters (sarangchae) set on either side of a central wall, together forming a long, rectangular enclosed layout. The sarangchae was newly built in 1994, and the lecture hall to the south of the house is also a recent addition. Originally, however, the house consisted only of an L-shaped main house and a straight-line servants' quarters. A distinctive feature is that, rather than building a separate sarangchae as grander households did, a wooden-floored room serving the function of a sarangchae was simply set into one side of the main house — a modest solution. The house was built so that part of the main house's space could serve as the sarangchae, without a separate detached men's quarters. Structurally it was built on the modest scale of a samnyangga (three-purlin roof frame), but the wisdom of the design is shown in its use of toetgan, narrow eave-side bays, at front and back to gain an extra half-bay of space at each end. It offers a fine example of the kind of house built by rural gentry families who, despite limited means, secured the space they needed.
