Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJang Tae-su passed the state civil service examination in 1861, the twelfth year of King Cheoljong, at the age of twenty-one. In 1875, the twelfth year of Emperor Gojong, he resigned his post and returned to his hometown to care for his aging father. In 1889, the twenty-sixth year of Emperor Gojong, he was appointed Deputy Royal Secretary but did not take up the post; however, when unrest broke out with the Donghak rebel forces, he took office at once, calmed the people, distributed his salary among the residents of Gosan county, and governed with benevolence. As Japanese atrocities grew more severe by the day, he returned to his hometown in 1907 and founded Sinmyeong School to nurture a new generation of talent, but the school was closed when Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910. When the nation fell, he refused to wear formal dress, declined to meet visitors, wrote a final testament, and began a hunger strike; he died twenty-seven days later, on the twenty-seventh day of the eleventh lunar month of 1910, at the age of seventy. His surviving artefacts include a portrait, a gold crown and a plain crown, an official belt, black cloth shoes, court robes, an identity tag, a ceremonial hand tablet, an ornamental knife, a round fan, the paper flower headdress awarded to successful examination candidates, a bronze statue, thirty-five royal certificates of appointment, one for each official rank, royal edicts, royal orders, and other official documents.
