A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local residents. Jangseonghyanggyo was built at Osan-ri in 1394, the third year of King Taejo, but was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598, and was rebuilt at Jangan-ri in 1600, the 33rd year of King Seonjo. At this time, as Jinwon-hyeon was merged into Jangseong-hyeon, Jinwon Hyanggyo at Jinwon-ri was abolished and its functions absorbed into Jangseonghyanggyo. In 1658, the ninth year of King Hyojong, it was moved to its present location, and it has undergone repeated repairs down to the present day. The buildings that remain today are Myeongnyundang (the lecture hall), the east and west dormitories Dongjae and Seojae, Daeseongjeon (the main shrine hall), the inner gate with three doors, and various auxiliary buildings. Built on sloping ground, Jangseonghyanggyo has, on the lower front site, the outer gate with three doors and Myeongnyundang, where students studied. In front of these stand the Dongjae and Seojae, forming the space for learning. On the higher ground to the rear is the space for rites, with Daeseongjeon and the Dongmu and Seomu (the east and west shrine buildings), following the typical hyanggyo layout of a study area in front and a shrine area behind. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to teach students, but after the Gabo Reforms of 1894 its educational function ceased, and only the spring and autumn memorial rites continue to be held. The books preserved here are valuable material for research into the local history of this region and into hyanggyo of the late Joseon period.
