Icheon Jungni Three-story Stone Pagoda
이천중리삼층석탑 · 利川中里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda is presumed to have been built by a hermitage affiliated with Anheungsa Temple. It had collapsed and lain neglected until 6 August 1972, when it was moved to its present site and restored. The pagoda consists of a three-storey body raised on a two-tier platform. The lower platform is built of four stone pieces; only the coping stone is exposed above ground, the other members having been damaged. Two tiers of cushioning stones are carved on the upper surface of the lower platform's coping stone. The upper platform's slab is formed of four stone panels, with corner pilasters (uju) carved in relief at the edges. Of the body stones, all storeys except the first were newly reinforced when the pagoda was relocated, with corner pilasters carved at the edges to resemble pillars. The roof stones (okgaeseok — the stone that caps a pagoda or stone lantern like a roof), gently sloped along the eaves-line and generously proportioned, are level at the centre of the eaves and curve up lightly at the corners. Beneath the roof stones are stepped roof-supports — 5 tiers on the first and second storeys, 4 tiers on the third and fourth — with a finely carved drip-groove running around the outer edge. On top of the third-storey roof stone a hole for the finial pole survives, but none of the finial elements, including the base plate, remain. The two-tier platform and three-storey body, together with the jointing technique of the stonework, follow the general style of Unified Silla stone pagodas. However, the platform and body lose formal regularity in the treatment of the cushioning stones and in the stone-dressing of the roof stones, suggesting that the pagoda was built in the early Goryeo period, inheriting the Unified Silla pagoda style.
