This is the third Catholic cathedral built in the region, following Pungsuwon Cathedral and Wonju Cathedral. In 1898, the second year of the Gwangmu era under Emperor Gojong, it belonged to the Wonju parish, but in 1904, the eighth year of Gwangmu, Father Poyau became parish priest and it became an independent parish. The church building was originally thatched, but Father Chizallet had it rebuilt in brick. It was partly damaged during the Korean War and was later repaired, and stands today in that form. A bell tower projects from the centre of the front façade, the building is rectangular in plan, and it is built of red brick. The buttresses supporting the building are of grey brick. All the windows are arched, their surrounds decorated with grey brick; the interior floor is wooden planking, and the walls are finished with plaster. Wonju Yongsomak Cathedral follows the general form and structure of church architecture of its period, and is notable for the very tall pointed spire at the top of its roof.
