This is a portrait shrine (yeongdang) built to house a portrait of Sin Suk-ju, whose pen name was Bohanjae. The present shrine was first built in 1830 and rebuilt in 1888, the 25th year of Emperor Gojong. It is a wooden, tile-roofed building three bays wide and two bays deep, with a gabled roof whose side profile forms the shape of the character for 'person'. Sin Suk-ju was a civil official of the early Joseon period who made a great contribution as a participant in the creation of Hunminjeongeum, and who wielded great influence over the politics and scholarship of his day. The portrait is kept in the wooden-floored room of the shrine. It was copied during the reign of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) from a portrait of Sin Suk-ju enshrined at Gubongyeongdang Shrine, and an inscription written about the portrait by Jeong Beom-jo at the time of copying is recorded on it. In format it is a full-length seated portrait in left three-quarter view, showing the sitter wearing a black silk official's hat and a green round-collared official robe, seated in a chair. Although this portrait is a copy, it faithfully follows the conventions for depicting a meritorious subject of the early Joseon period, and displays fine, meticulous technique.
