A hyanggyo (local Confucian school) is an educational institution built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction to local residents. Goheung Hyanggyo was built outside the west gate of Goheung-hyeon in 1441, the 23rd year of King Sejong, but was burned down in 1597, the 30th year of King Seonjo, during the Jeongyu War. It was rebuilt on its present site in 1695, the 21st year of King Sukjong, and has undergone several repairs since to reach its present form. The surviving buildings today comprise Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, the Dongmu and Seomu (the eastern and western shrine buildings), and the Dongjae and Seojae (the eastern and western dormitories). Standing on sloping ground, Goheung Hyanggyo places a space for study, centred on Myeongnyundang Hall, at the front, while on the higher ground at the rear stands a ritual space centred on Daeseongjeon Hall, following the traditional arrangement of study hall in front and shrine behind. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, slaves and books from the state in order to teach its students, but after the Gabo Reforms of 1894 its educational function lapsed, and today only the spring and autumn memorial rites continue to be held.
