Seokbun of Beopeungsa Temple, Yeongwol
영월 법흥사 석분 · 寧越 法興寺 石墳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone tomb, known as a seokbun, stands behind the Jeokmyeolbogung Hall of Beopeungsa Temple, a hall that enshrines the Buddha's sari (relics) rather than a Buddha statue. On the outside it makes use of the gentle slope descending from a low hill to form a mound that is not very high. The wall of the interior stone chamber is built of the flat faces of natural stones stacked in ten tiers; the first six tiers rise vertically, while from the seventh tier the angle is reduced as the stones are laid. The ceiling is covered with a single broad, flat capstone, so that the interior as a whole is almost circular in shape. Behind the tomb there is a stone coffin, suggesting that it may have been a place for enshrining the sari or remains of an eminent monk, but records describe it as having served a role like an earthen cave where monks pursued their practice. It is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period.
