Cheongnyeonggak Pavilion, Cheongju
청주 청녕각 · 淸州 淸寧閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCheongnyeonggak was used as a dongheon, the main hall of a local government office, where the provincial governor (gamsa) or magistrate (suryeong) of the Joseon period carried out official business; it was the central building of the government office. The Joseon-period government complex of Cheongju-mok once had many buildings besides the dongheon, including a gaekgwan (guesthouse for visiting officials) and a hyangsadang (hall for local Confucian rites), but all except this one building have since disappeared. According to the ridge-beam inscription, it was first built in 1656, the seventh year of King Hyojong, by the magistrate Sim Hwang; renovated in 1732, the eighth year of King Yeongjo, by the county magistrate Yi Byeong-jeong; and rebuilt again in 1825, the twenty-fifth year of King Sunjo, by the magistrate Yi Deok-su. It is presumed that the original building was ten kan (bays) in size, and that when Magistrate Yi Deok-su enlarged it to twenty-eight kan, the name plaque was also changed to "Cheongnyeonggak." The shape of its bracket sets (gongpo) reflects the style of the late Joseon period, confirming that the present building is the one rebuilt in 1825. It is a single-storey structure measuring seven kan across the front and four kan along the side, with a splendid paljak (hip-and-gable) roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 ("eight"). It is valuable material showing, in its original form, local government office architecture of the late Joseon period. It was formerly used as part of the Cheongwon County Office, and was restored in 2009 to its present appearance.
