Gojeong-ri Yangcheon Heo Clan Memorial Gate
고정리양천허씨정려 · 高井里陽川許氏旌閭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeongnyeo is a red gate erected by the state in front of the house of a person who rendered great service to the country, or of a filial son or virtuous woman. This is the memorial gate of Lady Heo, the seventh-generation grandmother of Kim Jang-saeng. Of the Yangcheon Heo clan, she was the daughter of Heo Eung, who served as Daesaheon (Inspector-General) under King Taejo (r. 1392–1398), and married Kim Gan, but was widowed at the age of seventeen. When her own parents tried to have her remarry, she brought her son to Yeonsan, her late husband's family's home region, raised him well, and spent the rest of her life there. When word of this reached the royal court, a memorial gate was erected for her in the 13th year of King Sejo (1467). Afterwards, the Gwangsan Kim clan produced many scholars and literary figures, including Kim Jang-saeng and Kim Jip. The memorial gate is a single-bay structure on both front and side, with an ornate hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character '八' (eight), showing one facet of the elaborate and distinctive architectural style of the Joseon period.
