The Daejoseongukㆍdaedeokguk Tongsangjoyak is a 13-article treaty of commerce concluded between Joseon and Germany on 18 November of the 21st year of Emperor Gojong (1884). It comprises the treaty of amity and commerce between Joseon and Germany, its supplementary trade regulations, customs tariffs, tariff regulations, and additional protocols, made up of one Chinese-script (hanmun) manuscript volume of 32 leaves, one English manuscript volume of 45 leaves, and one German manuscript volume of 45 leaves. This volume records the establishment of diplomatic relations between Joseon and Daedeokguk — that is, Germany — concluded at Changdeokgung Palace on 17 August 1884 (the 21st year of Emperor Gojong), by which the two countries agreed to travel between each other and trade on friendly terms. To this end, it provided that the status of each country's nationals would be guaranteed and their property protected, and that consulates-general and vice-consulates would be established, with resident officials (posted abroad on government business) stationed within the treaty trading areas. It was further stipulated that if an offence occurred between nationals of the two countries, the resident officials of both sides would confer and adjudicate the case according to their own countries' laws. As for trade, the items covered were recorded and limited to books, maps, plants, liquor, amber, medicines and the like.
