Seated Yeongyang Yeondang-dong Stone Buddha
영양연당동석불좌상 · 英陽蓮塘洞石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seated stone Buddha is housed in a temporary structure built in the middle of the village of Yeondang-ri, Ibam-myeon, Yeongyang County, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The statue is complete with both a mandorla (aureole) and a pedestal, and although its head and eye area are damaged and the mandorla is broken into three pieces, it survives in an almost complete state. The face is rectangular, and the square torso, level shoulders and narrowed knees give the figure a somewhat rigid appearance. It holds a medicine bowl in its left hand, showing that it represents the Medicine Buddha, who is believed to cure the illnesses of all living beings. The robe covers both shoulders and is carved with parallel, wave-like folds. The high, three-tiered octagonal pedestal is carved with lotus designs, and the mandorla behind the body is elaborately carved with lotus and cloud patterns. The lotus design of the pedestal, the cloud pattern of the mandorla, and the well-ordered form of the body together with its wave-like robe folds all clearly reflect the sculptural style of the late Unified Silla period. An inscription carved on the back of the statue shows that it was made in 889. The work is highly significant both for having a securely established production date and for being a valuable example of a late Unified Silla piece with pronounced regional character.
