The Daejoseongukㆍdaebeomminjuguk Tongsangjoyak (Hanmun Gate) — the Chinese-character (hanmun) manuscript version of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the Great Joseon State and the Great French Republic — is a manuscript in one volume of thirty-three leaves. It was concluded between Joseon and France on the fourth day of the sixth month of the twenty-third year of Emperor Gojong (1886), and comprises the thirteen-article main treaty of amity and commerce together with its supplementary commercial regulations, tariff schedule, tariff regulations, and subsequent supplementary agreements. The substance of the treaty followed the model of the Jo-yeo Treaty of Amity and Commerce, but of particular note is that Article 9, Paragraph 2 of the main text included a clause on "religion," through which the right to propagate religion was recognised by the Joseon government. Under the most-favoured-nation clause, this ultimately meant that the nations of Europe and America gained, just as France had, not only the right to propagate religion but also to operate educational institutions in support of missionary work, opening a new chapter in Joseon's educational and cultural life through missionary activity.
