Gangneung Royal Tomb Avalokitesvara Ri Five-story Stone Pagoda
강릉관음리오층석탑 · 江陵觀音里五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone pagoda with a five-storey body raised on a two-tiered platform (gidan); in the surrounding area, building foundations that appear to be the remains of a temple site, along with a stone object thought to be the pedestal of a stone Buddha, survive. On each face of the lower platform, a round, flattened blind-arch design (ansang) is shallowly carved, while on the upper platform pilaster shapes are carved at the corners and centre of each face. The body of the pagoda is built up with the body stone and roof stone of each storey each carved from a single block; the first-storey body stone is relatively large, and from the second storey the height drops sharply. The roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and their four corners curve sharply upward; a notable feature is that each storey is of similar size, showing almost no change from one to the next. At the top, above the noban (the base of the finial), an angwa (an ornament shaped like a lotus flower in full bloom) survives, forming the finial. Judging from features such as the reduction of the roof-stone supports to three tiers and the pronounced upward curve of the four corners, the pagoda is presumed to be a work of the Goryeo period.
