The Birojeon Hall of Ansimsa Temple was built in 1613, the fifth year of King Gwanghaegun, and repaired in 1842, the eighth year of King Heonjong, in the late Joseon period. Birojeon, also known as Daejeokgwangjeon Hall, was originally a hall enshrining the Buddha Vairocana, but because it has recently come to house arhat images it is also called Yeongsanjeon Hall. The building has three bays across the front and two bays along the side, and is a gable-roofed structure whose side profile forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person). It is built in the dapo style, in which bracket sets supporting the roof eaves are placed both above the columns and between them: the central bay carries two bracket sets each, while the bays on either side carry one each. Overall, the Birojeon Hall displays the characteristic features of late Joseon architecture, forming a fine contrast with the Daeungjeon Hall elsewhere in the temple grounds, a building of the mid-Joseon period.
