A bongpyo is a boundary marker erected by the state to prohibit entry to a designated area. This stele stands at the top of the pass leading from Hoedong-ri, Jeong Seon-eup, Jeong Seon-gun, over to Jangjeon-ri, Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun. Since ancient times this area has produced abundant cultivated and wild ginseng, and was frequently visited by people digging for it. To prevent this major ginseng-producing region from being damaged, the state erected the stele and forbade entry. It is of particular interest as the only bongpyo of this kind discovered to date. The stele is made from an elongated natural stone, with only the side and back faces dressed. On the front, the large characters reading "Gangneungbu Samsan Bongpyo" (Boundary Marker of the Three Mountains of Gangneung Prefecture) are carved horizontally, while smaller characters on the right side read "Jimyeong Mahang" (place name: Mahang) and those on the left read "Jeong Seon-gye" (Jeong Seon boundary). Based on the record in the Geumje (Prohibition) clause of the Hyeongjeon (Penal Code) section of the Sinbo Sugyojiprok, the stele is presumed to have been erected around 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon.
