Seated Rock-carved Vairocana Buddha in Jeongha-dong, Cheongju
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a rock-carved Buddha image at Jeongha-dong, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. The head appears as if wearing a hat, and behind it a round halo is carved. The body is well proportioned, and the naturally flowing, thin-lined drapery folds are especially notable. The right hand appears to grasp the index finger of the left hand. This distinctive hand gesture invites comparison with the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha at Biroam Hermitage, Donghwasa Temple (a treasure), and the Iron Seated Vairocana Buddha at Dopiansa Temple (a national treasure). Given the simplified, unrefined modelling of the various parts of the body and the somewhat rough, unpolished carving technique, the Seated Rock-carved Vairocana Buddha in Jeongha-dong, Cheongju is thought to date from the Goryeo period.
