Seated Gyeongju Yeoramgok Valley Stone Buddha
경주열암곡석불좌상 · 慶州列岩谷石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue was found at a temple site in Nogok-ri, Naenam-myeon, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and its head is now missing. The body is slender, and the robe draped over both shoulders is thinly rendered, with relatively refined folds. The left hand is raised with the palm facing outward and the fingertips pointing upward, while the right hand rests on the knee with the back of the hand showing and the fingertips pointing towards the ground. The lower part of the pedestal on which the Buddha sits is carved with downward-facing lotus petals, and the upper part with upward-facing lotus petals. Judging from the lotus decoration of the pedestal, the slender and unbroken lines of the body, and the refined technique of the robe folds, the statue is presumed to have been made in the late eighth to early ninth century, during the Unified Silla period.
