통영 충렬묘비 · 統營 忠烈廟碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Chungnyeol Tombstone in Tongyeong was erected to hand down to later generations the loyalty and achievements of Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-sin. The inscription was composed in 1614, the sixth year of King Gwanghaegun, by Left State Councillor Yi Hang-bok, and the seal-script heading at the top of the stele, reading "Tongjesa Chungmu Yi-gong Chungnyeolmyo Bimyeong" (Stele Inscription for the Chungnyeolmyo Shrine of Naval Commander Chungmu-gong Yi), was written by Kim Su-hang. The closing section of the inscription explains the circumstances of the stele's erection, and this passage was written by Song Si-yeol. The stele itself is said to have been set up later, in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, when the sixtieth Tongjesa (Naval Commander) Min Seom furnished it with a capstone and a turtle-shaped base. The inscription contains praise for Yi Sun-sin's achievements during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598), together with expressions of respect and admiration for him.
